Summary and Suggestion

Purpose of Practicum

the objectives of SEA Teacher project is:

  1. To enable pre-service student teachers to develop their teaching skills and pedagogy
  2. To encourage the pre-service student teachers to practice their English skills
  3. To allow the pre-service student teachers to gain a broader regional and world view
  4. To expose future teachers to diverse teaching and learning situations and opportunities, and the value of flexibility.

and based on my experiences in Chiang Rai as the Pre-Service Student for a month, i can feel that this program really benefits me. through this program i can improve my teaching skills and pedagogy, and of course my english skills too. i also can see the differences between Indonesia and Thailand, and because of this differences i can understand that culture and habit can effect the way people act. because the differences i can experience the diverse teaching and learning situations and opportunities, and the value of flexibility.

Procedures of Practicum

for the practicum procedures, we did everything based on the schedule and school rules. i came to the school everyday from monday to friday at 7.40 am untul 4 pm. for the first week i did the observation. and from the observation i can saw how the teacher handled their students and how they taught the students. the second weeki made the lesson plan and did the teaching assisting. in this week my adviser always told me what i need to fixed and what i need to do in the classroom. in the third and fourth week i did the teaching practicum in my classroom. i teach the class in 50 minutes for each period. after all of my activities i and vika (she also got mengrai School as her practicum school) made the report and did the presentation in CRRU a day before we back to Indonesia.

Outcomes of Practicum

This program also mede me improve my teaching skills, pedagogy, and english skills (because the only language i can use to communicate with non indonesian people is English). Another thing is i learned  how to deal and respect another people who have different culture with us. Moreover the differences between Indonesia and Thailand made me understand different types of the students and i believe what i have learned during my pre-service student teaher project activity in Chiang Rai will help me to become a better teacher in the future.

The Challenges of Practicum

the challenges were about the different language we use. most of the Thai Students don’t speak english, so it was a little bit hard to communicate with them. to overcome this i use the google translate, power point in english, also body language. but glad that every students really respect me and my class. even sometimes they confused with english, they still manage to tried to answer my question or quiz.

Overall impression

This Program is amazing program i have ever experienced in my life. this program really makes me experienced something that i will never get in my whole life if i didn’t decide to apply for this program. Through this program i got a lot of benefits. Not only practice in teaching, i also learned Thai Language. Eventhogh Thai Language is difficult to learn but everyone near me always taught me Thai and it makes me know some words in Thai, even for counting from one to thousands. and because of this program i also gained new friends from another country and got new friends from another provinces in Indonesia.

Suggestion for Future Improvement

SEA Teacher Project is a good and amazing program. this program really help me to improve in many aspects. all the teacher in the school are so nice and help me a lot to finished my 1 month practicum in Mengrai School. however, it still need something to improve for the next batch especially for the school. i think it will be better if the student teacher got a schedule from the school or the adviser about their activities during the practicum instead of just follow the teacher based the teacher’s schedule.

My Profile

Pre-Service student teacher exchange program brought me to Chiang Rai, Thailand and made me met CRRU as my receiving university also Mengrai School as my practicum place for a month. My name is Ahbi Mahdianing Rum, and people around me used to call me Ahbi. I was born in North Bengkulu on July 1998, so this year, i am already turned 21. Now i am a student from University of Bengkulu, majoring in mathematics education, and it is my 4th year of study.

Teaching Practice

Procedures of Teaching

my practicum classes were Mathayom 6/1, Mathayom 6/2, and Mathayom 6/6. for those classes i taught the same topic, that was about Sequence and Series with different sub topics for each peried. from what i have observed, i can saw that most of the students on those classes were really quiet and seem passive. that was why i thought about something to made the students active in the classroom. i used power point and worksheets as my media learning. and also i used the number cards with different number for each students. The reason was because i gave one card for each student and while the learning process was running i can call the number randomly, the student who own that number had to introduce them self and answered my question or solve the problem i have given to them. The reason why i used the number cards were because Thai names are difficult. With this method i can communicate with them eventhough i don’t know their name, also i can learn their names, and it made the students active in the class so the learning  activities will be meaningful for them and it also good for the teacher.

Time Management and Organizing Activities

i taught the students based on the lesson plan i have made before. The order is introduction and warm up (25 Minutes), practice (15 minutes), and reviewing and closing (10 minutes). In the  beginning of the lesson i did the part of introduction and warm up, i started with greeting and asked how their feeling and i asked them about the topic that day. after that i showed the motivation words through the power point and asked one of the student to read and explained what’s the meaning of the motivation words.

here is some examples of the motivation words that i gave to the students

with this kind of thing to open the lesson, i can got the student’s attention and it made them interesting to join my lesson.

in this session i also explained to the student about the topic that day. after i gave them a motivation words, i gave them some math riddles to warming up their mind. here is some examples of math riddles that i gave to the students.

in this session was the funnest part of the learning process, the reason was because all the students try to guess the numbers and it made the atmosphere in the class fun. most of the students active in this session. because there was none of them can guess the number correctly with their first answer just made this session become more fun.

After all the small warm up activities, i explained the topic that day and asked the students some question to make them active in the learning process. i  also gave them examples and one question to solve by them self.

After finish the first part of activity based on my lesson plan, i moved to the second part, that is practice. In this session i gave worksheet to the student and let them solve it in 15 minutes.

And last activity was reviewing and closing, in this session i asked the student wheater they have anything to ask about the topic that day or not. if there is no question, i gave them 1 quiz to solve and five first students who answered it correctly got a plus point and got a mini gift from me such us candies and chocolate.

Besides of teaching activity in Mengrai School, i also became a volunteer in English Camp event on 23th of September from 7.30 a.m – 4.00 p.m together with AFS students from Germany, America, Spain, and Thailand. We had so much fun during the event. It was so nice to met all the new friends and met elementary school students, we learn by playing game from one spot to another spot and each spot has different kind of game.

Problem Solving

when i taught the students in Mengrai school, i faced some difficulties. especially about languange. the reason was beacause most of the student don’t speak english and don’t know english. so it made the learning process become harder. what i did to handle this is using power point and worksheet. power point and worksheets help the student to understand what i said and what i explained. and to overcome this problem, i need to speak slowly, clearly, and loud. another problem was the student’s name. Thai name is so hard to memorize, so i used number cards to overcome this problem. so i can mention the number and the one who own the number can introduce their self and answer my question. whis these kind of solution i can teach the students well and the students understand the lesson.

Classroom Management

before i did my teaching practicum i made the lesson plan first. thee reason was it can help me to manage the classroom based on what i have already prepared on my lesson plan. The order is introduction and warm up (25 Minutes), practice (15 minutes), and reviewing and closing (10 minutes). to teach the students i used power point and worksheets as my media learning. and also i used the number cards with different number for each students to make us can communicate easily.

i asked some question and mention one number, the student who own that number need to answer my question. i also asked about other student’s opinion. so the learning process can be effective and the atmosphere can be alive.

i also used the attention gatters, such as Hello-Hi (i said Hello and then the students said Hi). this attention gatter can made the students gave their attention to the teacher.

when the students did their worksheet i walked around the class to watched what the students do. sometimes i came from one table to another table just to make sure they understand what they need to do and help them if they faced the difficulty.

Power Point and Worksheets

here is the power point i have used for each meeting in the class.

here is the worksheets i have given to them for each meeting.

Teaching Plan

in Mengrai school i got Mathayom 6/1, Mathayom 6/2 and Mathayom 6/6 as my practicum classes. based on the curriculum, i have to teach about Sequence and Series to the students. in for each period i teach different sub topic, and the sub topics are:

  1. definition of the sequence
  2. General term of the sequence
  3. Next Terms and Common Difference of the Arithmetic Sequence
  4. General Term of Arithmetic Sequence
  5. Arithmetic Sequence
  6. Geometric Sequence

i will teach the students based on the teaching plan i have made before my teaching class. the teching plan i made also known as lesson plan. The order for my lesson plan is introduction and warm up, practice, and reviewing and closing. In the  beginning of the lesson what i will do is introduction and warm up, in this session i will explain to the student about the topic in general, after that i will give them a motivation words, and then give them some riddles to warming up their mind. After all the small warming up activities, i will explain the topic and ask the students some question to make them active in the class. i  also will give them examples and one question to solve by them self.

After finish the first part of activity based on my lesson plan, i move to the second part, that is practice. In this session i will give the worksheet to the students and let them solve it in 15 minutes. And last activity is reviewing and closing, in this session i will ask the student wheater they have anything to ask about the topic or not. if there is no question, i give them 1 quiz to solve and five first students who answer it correctly will get a plus point and get a mini gift from me such as candies and chocolate.

Here is the lesson plans i have used in Mengrai School

PEDAGOGICAL CONTENTS

in this pedagogical contents blog i will explain all the things that related to teaching method, learning materials, technology, authentic assessment, and others from what i have observed in Mengrai School.

Teaching Methods of the teacher

from what i have observed, most of the Math teacher in Mengrai School use the Teacher-Centered approach. so they explain everything and make the student listen to them. In Teacher-Centered Approach to learning, Teachers are the main authority  figure in this model. Students are viewed as “empty vessels” whose primary role is to passively receive information (via lectures and direct instruction) with an end goal of testing and assessment. they also gives some examples and exercises for the students. sometimes the teacher did the ice breaking thingy or playing a game for a small break. the teacher give the explaination by the projector. so they bring the materials and show it to the students through the screen.

Learning Materials and Inovation

The math teacher in Mengrai School got their teaching materials from the math textbook. they took the materials from the book and make some inovation to the materials so that the students can easily understand the topic. they use the book as their guide, but most of the time they make the example or the exercise by themself.

Sources of Learning and Technology Used by the Teacher

from what i have observed, all the math teacher in Mengrai School use the math texbook as the sources of learning. the book that they used is depends on what class they will be teaching. and the technology that the teacher used is projector and computer. they use the computer to connect it with the projector. they write the solution on the screen of the computer and show it to the students through the projetor. some classes with no computer use the make the teacher write the solution on the paper and show it through the projector.

Assessment

Learning Assessment

Learning assessment must be based on two fundamental principles, i.e., evaluation for the purpose of developing the learners’ capacity and for appraising their achievements. With a view to succeeding in developing the learners’ learning quality, learners must be strengthened and assessed by availing of the relevant indicators, so as to achieve the learning standards prescribed. Such evaluation also reflects the learners’ major capacities and their desirable characteristics, which are the main goals of measuring and evaluating the learning outcomes at all levels, i.e., classroom level, educational institution level, educational service area level, and national level. Learning assessment is a process of enhancing the learners’ quality by using assessment results as data and information to show learners’ developmental progress and accomplishment. The data will also be useful for strengthening the learners, thus enabling them to learn to their highest potentiality.

Classroom Assessment

Measurement and evaluation are part of the learning process. Teachers regularly and continuously measure and evaluate students’ performance in teaching-learning activities by using diverse assessment techniques, e.g., asking questions, observing, examining homework, assessing projects, tasks/assignments and portfolios, and using written tests, etc. Teachers will conduct evaluations themselves or provide learners with opportunities for self evaluation, peer-to-peer evaluation, and evaluation by parents. Learners who do not succeed in meeting the standards prescribed in the indicators will need remedial measures for teaching and learning.

Classroom assessment s aimed at verifying whether and to what extent learners have achieved development and progress in learning through the provided teaching-learning activities, and determining what must be improved and which areas must be strengthened. Furthermore, evaluation also provides teachers with necessary data for improving their own performance, which must be in accord with the established learning standards and indicators.

School Assessment

This evaluation is conducted by the educational institution in order to appraise the learners’ achievements on an annual/semester basis, based on assessment of reading, analytical thinking and writing, desirable characteristics, and learner development activities. The aim is also to obtain relevant information about whether education provided by the educational institution has enabled learners to reach their goals of learning, and what are the learners’ strengths. The learning outcomes can also be compared with national assessment criteria. School assessment will provide data and information for improving policy, curriculum, projects and teaching-learning methodology. Evaluation outcomes are also useful for preparation of each educational institution’s educational quality development plan in accord with the educational quality assurance guidelines, as well as reports on each educational institution’s achievement to its school board, the office of the educational service area, OBEC, parents and the community.

Criteria for Learning Assessment

  1. Teachers will judge the learning outcomes of all courses. Learners must have an attendance record of not less than 80% of the total learning time required for the respective courses for each semester;
  2. Learners must be assessed on all indicators and must pass all the criteria prescribed by the educational institutions;
  3. Learners must be judged on the learning outcomes of each course; and
  4. Learners must be evaluated and must pass all the criteria prescribed by the educational institutions regarding reading, analytical thinking and writing, desirable characteristics and learner development activities.

Measurement and Evaluation System

There is three Assessment in Mengrai School based on the information i have gotten and based on my observation:

Learning Assessment

Learning assessment must be based on two fundamental principles. for the example, the evaluation for the purpose of developing the learners’ capacity and for appraising their achievements. Learning assessment is a process of increase the learners’ quality by using assessment results as data and information. this assessment can also show the learners’ developmental progress and accomplishment.

Classroom assessment

Teachers regularly and continuously measure and evaluate students’ performance in the learning activities by using diverse assessment techniques, e.g., asking questions, observing, examining homework, assessing projects, tasks/assignments and portfolios, and using written tests, etc.

Classroom assessment is aimed to verifying whether the students already understand the topic or not. it also aimed to know what the learners have achieved, their development and progress in learning through the learning activities.

School assessment

This evaluation is conducted by the educational institution in order to appraise the learners’ achievements on an annual/semester basis, based on assessment of reading, analytical thinking and writing, desirable characteristics, and learner development activities. Evaluation outcomes will be useful for the development plan of each educational institution’s. another thing is for the reports on each educational institution’s achievement to its school board, the office of the educational service area, OBEC, parents and the community.

Curriculum in Mengrai School: The Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (A.D. 2008)

I can see the differences between School in Indonesia and Thailand. In Indonesia we use K13 which is make the students active and do their things alone with a help from the teacher in the class. Meanwhile in Thailand, form what i have observe, the students seem passive and they were really quiet in the class, but some of them also active in the class.

Mengrai School use The Basic Education Core Curriculum as their curriculum. This curriculum is aimed at the full development of learners in all respects-morality, wisdom, happiness, and potentiality for further education and livelihood. There is 5 goals in total. The following goals from basic education is:

  1. Morality, ethics, desirable values, self-esteem, self-discipline, observance of Buddhist teachings or those of one’s faith, and guiding principles of Sufficiency Economy;
  2. Knowledge and skills for communication, thinking, problem-solving, technological know-how, and life skills;
  3. Good physical and mental health, hygiene, and preference for physical exercise
  4. Patriotism, awareness of responsibilities and commitment as Thai citizens and members of the world community, and adherence to a democratic way of life and form of government under constitutional monarchy; and
  5. Awareness of the need to preserve all aspects of Thai culture and Thai wisdom, protection and conservation of the environment, and public-mindedness with dedication to public service for peaceful and harmonious co-existence.

The Basic Education Core Curriculum is aimed at inculcating among learners the following five key competencies, that are Communication Capacity, Thinking Capacity, Problem–Solving Capacity, Capacity for Applying Life Skills, and Capacity for Technological Application.

Teaching Plan

the teacher in Mengrai School seems like didn’t really use teaching plan for each meeting. they had 1 teaching plan and apply it to every class they teach. from what i have observed, they have the same method for each meetings. the difference is the topic of the day in the class.

Chiang Rai? Oops, Let’s go to Chiang Mai!

August 17, 2019 was an independence day of Indonesia and we say it as hari kemerdekaan. MERDEKA Indonesia! it was my first time celebrated independance day in another country. kinda different, but i still can felt the hype of the independance day through my social media accounts.

at first we, indonesian in Chiang Rai, want to celebrated it together, but sadly we had no stuffs to did so. thats why i and vika decided to go to Chiang Mai to spend our weekend.

at morning, around 6 a.m, i and vika were walking from Mengrai School to the intersection near the terrific lamp. we waited for the bus to take us to Bandu. after waited for 10 minutes finally the bus came.

the bus stopped us at Bandu, and we waited for another bus to take us to Chiang Mai. after a long waited, the bus come at 7.30. we and another passanger go in the bus. when the bus is running, we seen the beautiful view along the way. it takes 4 hours from Chiang Rai to Chiang Rai. actually we slept a lot in the bus lol

at 12 p.m we have arrived in Chiang Mai. and my first impression about Ciang Mai was- it’s big. we can totally see the different between Chaing rai and Chiang Mai. Chiang Rai is a quiet city, not too busy. also Chiang rai is so green, so we can felt that the weather is so nice. meanwhile in Chiang Mai, it is a busy city. busier than Chiang Rai and its hotter than Chiang Rai. we can see high and big building in the central of the city.

the reason why i and vika went to Chiang Mai was because it is the province which is close with Chiang Rai also there are so many good place to visit. so , because i and vika want to explore Chiang Mai. without take too many time, we went to Central Festival right away after we arrived in Chiang Mai.

around 3 p.m we went to hostel. ok, its hostel. because we don’t have much money to rent a room in hotel. we need to save our money 5555 after we arrived in our hostel, we take some rest because we need to continue our trip!

at 4 p.m i and vika went to the night market, we find halal food for early-dinner. we decided to go to the tittle istanbul. the taste of the food is so good, it was a big portion for both of me and vika.

after finished our dinner, i and vika went to the night market. and wow- THE NIGHT MARKET IN CHIANG MAI IS BIG. we bought many things there, because the price was cheaper than the price in Chiang Rai.

for the second day, at morning aroung 9 a.m i and vika went to the wat bupparam and continue our trip to the old city. we can see temple everywhere in the old city, and the old city is too big, we felt so exhausted to walking around the old city.

sadly at 2 p.m we need to go back to Chiang Rai because the schedule for the bust from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai was at 3.00 pm. but thats okay! because it was a wonderful and amazing experience. hope i can go there again for the next time.

#DAY 13: Science Day

on friday August 16, 2019, the science students in Mengrai School celebrate the Science day! so i and vika went to science building to take a look what are the students doing there.

it was so fun to watch the students show some performance that related with science. and actually we don’t know what they said because they perform with thai language. but they show experiment such us volcanic, vapor, and many more. they also made a spesific spots for drawing, 3D and 4D pictures, Molusca, planets, etcetera.

student’s performance
table for molusca and sea animals
stand for drwing, 3D, and 4D pictures

we also went to another room in the upstairs, physics room. the students in that room made a mini electric car. they connected the dynamo, cables, and battery to became a car. that was excellent!

together with physics students

after that some students guided us to another room. in that room they had puzzles. so i and vika decided to played and rearranged the puzzle. and guess what? in the middle of our activity to put the puzzle on its place, a teacher come to gave us beverages! it was tase sour but tasty. kinda taste like a lemon.

after we finished our puzzle and beverages, i and vika back to our building. i went to math building and vika went to english building. because i have been back to my building, so i need to continue my activities. i help Kru yaya in the class because the students had a test and after that i made my power point and worksheet!

Busy with Assisting, Lesson Plan, and Worksheets thingy!

in the second week of Pre-Service Student Teacher Program activity, i was busy with assisting, lesson plan, and worksheets thingy.

i started my day with daily flag ceremony in Mengrai School at 8.00, after that i continue my day with assisting activities. i was doing assisting activity in Kru Oranun’s class and Kru Yaya’s class. i help them to watched the students when the teacher explained the lesson. i help the students if they faced some problem while solve the math probel and i help the teacher to control the students when they had a test.

besides assisting activity, i also made my lesson plan in this week. i made lesson plan for Matthayom 6 and the topic is about sequence and series. Kru Yaya, as my adviser, help me a lot to made my lesson plan better. she also told me what i need to do and what i don’t need to do in the class when i’m going to teach my students. such us using english and speak slowly, using number cards to communicate with the students, etcetera. i was really grateful to had her as my adviser. she also treated me really well. i love you, Kru Yaya!

however, in the process of making lesson plan. i also prepare to make worksheet, so my lesson plan will be good to apply in the class. when i made my worksheet, Kru Yaya also help me a alot. she told me if she found a difficult question for the student in my worksheet and she told me to change it with the easier one.

sometimes i and vika went to CK shop at afternoon to bought some snacks and went to Tea Shop to bought Iced Thai Milk Tea, because we need them to called our idea to make worksheet and lesson plan haha glad that our house was near to the CK Shop and Tea Shop.

moreover, because we were too busy with our activity we can’t go anywhere. so one day, August 14th 2019, at the afternoon, when Kru Tuk asked me and Vika about are we having a plan to go with her to buy some groceries or not, because she want to go to the groceries store to bought something for her student who hospitalize, then we just said yes haha. we didn’t have any idea at that time, we were too tired and need some refreshing, that’s why.

Kru Tuk took us to the Tesco Lotus and we bought some snacks, vegetable, fruits, fish ball, etcetera. after we have paid for our stuffs, Kru Tuk drived us to Mae Fah Luang University Hospital. it made i and vika visited Mae Fah Luang University. Mae Fah Luang university is so big and so green. such a nice university!

#DAY 8: LEBARAN DAY

August 11th, 2019

that day was such a sad day for me because that day was a big day for muslims, lebaran day, Idul Adha. i was so sad because i can’t celebrate it together with my family. but in another hand, i also felt happy because i can celebrate it together with my new friends from another province. it was my first time celebrate lebaran day in another country and together with all the new people around me.

to celebrate it we need to do a pray in the mosque, so i and vika went to Daru naman Mosque near the clock tower. we already made promise with another student teacher’s muslims to had a pray in Daru Naman Mosque. so. that’s why i and vika went there to celebrate it together wih our friend.

take a picture together after we have prayed for idul adha

i made a video call to my family in Indonesia, and i was crying. actually one of my friend also crying after made a phone call with her family, she is Aul haha don’t know why but i guess we are too weak for this kind of situation.

usually, every idul adha day indonesians always got beef of goat meat from the mosque in Indonesia. but we -all the indonesians- didn’t get any in Chiang Rai, and so do the Thai people. so we decided to find a halal resto to had a breakfast-lunch (because it was too late to called it as breakfast but it was too fast to called it as lunch lol). we went to shareeneen by walking, it is not too far from the Daru Naman Mosque but tired tho

we ordered some food, had conversations, threw some jokes, and learn filipino language for indonesians and april learn indonesian from us. sometimes all of my friend are so funny, they know how to make us laugh. they all are so friendly, and what makes me so happy to have them is we always take care of each other and it seems like no one is selfish.

after finished our breakfast-lunch, i and vika thought about a trip to spent our time together. so we were planning to went to the White Temple because we thought it will be so fun is we went to the most famaous place in Chiang Rai, together. we asked the other about this, and some of them were agree. but sadly not all of them can joined this trip because they already had a plan to go to the white temple together with their teacher. only i, vika, awal, Lya, Cath, Ferdi, sapta, Miftah, Ferdi, Jack, and Muhlis who can join the trip. so thats why we went to awal’s dorm and had some rest there before we went to the white temple. around 1 p.m we ordered grab car and the driver stoped us near the white temple. but the reality was not as beautiful as our imagination. guess what? it was rainy haha so we ordered grab car again and went to muhlis dorm. we took a nap there and around 3.30 pm, it was not rainy anymore. so we walked to the White Temple.

after we arrived at the White Temple what i can say just wow, beautiful, amazing. it was because White Temple is that beautifully amazing. the details are amazing. it was so nice to had a chance to go there. especially went there together with our precious friends.
